Competition Etiquette
It is extremely important that you be a positive role model.
PLEASE REMEMBER...
· RESPECT - Your instructors and team members.
· HONESTY - There may be times when your team may not receive a score that seems fair, however, please don’t complain about the judging. We can always learn from the judges.
· RESPONSIBILITY - If you have a question, concern or complaint, see your instructor. Approaching a judge or behaving inappropriately or verbal disrespect of any manner will result in a team deduction or disqualification.
· CARING - Encourage your team members to do the best they can today and work hard for tomorrow. Every competition is different and self-evaluation is very important. It’s difficult to compare scores because this is a subjective scoring system. Your team’s score may not necessarily reflect improvement but you will know if your team did better.
Sportsmanship…
At ALL COMPETITIONS we have the following expectations and policies for the dancers.
· Dancers, Instructors, Parents and Friends are all expected to maintain sportsmanship for all teams. We expect everyone to remember that all teams deserve respect and as the YMCA we have the RESPONSIBILITY to exemplify the values of RESPECT and CARING.
· All dancers, parents and instructors will try to sit together when possible in a designated area at competitions to cheer on and support all YMCA dance teams.
· If dancers do not stay for awards, the student and/or parent must inform their instructor of this ahead of time. It is then the student’s responsibility to obtain any trophies, ribbons and awards that were received during their next scheduled class time.
We warm up as a team, which will be directed by an instructor or designate. Warm-ups will be controlled in that they will consist of a series of repeating routines and various skills. For all competitions it is essential that you be prepared for warm-ups and in proper attire at the designated time, usually 2 hours before scheduled competing time. Student must be prepared in full makeup & hair at this time.
NOTE: Since every dancer plays an important role on the team, failure to observe the above expectations and policies dramatically hurts the team as a whole. If a dancer is missing from a competition their vital role on the team is also missing, therefore causing the team to change the routine. This is why we ask that every participant commit to all of the competitions related to their team and as a courtesy to members of your child’s group(s) and instructor(s), please be honest when the schedule comes out----we ask that you do not wait until mid year to tell us, as routines will have been choreographed and would be more difficult to change. Please note that your child will still be able to attend the weekly competitive team classes with her group, but will not be choreographed into the routine(s) for competitions. Your child will still be allowed to perform in our annual Dance Revue in May if your child is in his/her dance classes for the 2 weeks prior to the show.

In all competitions, the most important thing about your performance is that you did the best that you could do. Scores will vary from competition to competition. Listen to your instructor for ways in which you can improve your performance. We will be placing a big emphasis on improvement. Every time you perform, it should be with the attitude that you will do your best. Every time you improve, you are a winner, regardless of your score or place.
