Philosophy

The YMCA of the Fox Cities Dance Academy has many different goals and objectives.  The entire competitive dance team program is developed around these goals.

The YMCA recognizes competition, however, winning should not be the reason you practice or compete.  To be a winner you don't have to win a ribbon or receive a trophy; you only need to have tried your hardest.  The word "loser" does not exist in the YMCA Dance Program.

Good sportsmanship, HONESTY and fair play are an important part of this program.  It is important to teach children at a young age these very important qualities.  The dancers are taught to look upon the other team(s) with RESPECT and to make new friends. The instructors also portray these qualities to set good examples for the dancers.

Team unity is something that every team in every sport needs.  Team unity is a feeling among team members that encourages support for each other and also builds lasting friendships. The dance staff  encourages friendships through various team gatherings, special days, parties, and dance team competitions.

The commitment to join the dance team must be made by the parent as well as the child.  Behind every good dancer is an even better parent.

Although membership on the Fox Cities Dance Academy team is available to anyone who meets the minimum requirements of skills needed, participation with the team is a privilege, not a right.

Dance is an extremely demanding sport.  At every comparable level, from novice to elite, not many other sports place such demand on the athlete.  Consider the demands carefully; they are outlined throughout this Handbook section.

You must be willing to make this commitment!

Ballet Class Requirement

All team members are required to take ONE 1-hour ballet class each week.  Classes are split into levels 1-2 and 3-4, with multiple times available for each level (see Class Schedule for details).  These classes do not compete but do perform in the Dance Factory Annual Revue.  Please see Costume Fee information.

Elite Class Requirement

All elite team members are required to take TWO 1-hour ballet classes each week and ONE 1-hour technique class each week in addition to their regular team classes.  There is no performance or costume for these classes.  See the Class Schedule page for class times and locations.
