Philosophy
The YMCA of the Fox Cities Dance Team has many different goals and objectives. The entire competitive dance team program is developed around these goals.
The YMCA recognizes competition, however, winning should not be the reason you practice or compete. The point that is being made is, to be a winner, you don't have to win a ribbon, but you only have to have tried your hardest for that performance or improved your score. The word "loser" does not exist in the YMCA Dance Team Program.
Good sportsmanship, HONESTY and fair play are an important part of this program. It is important to teach children at a young age these very important qualities. The dancers are taught to look upon the other team(s) with RESPECT and to make new friends. They have to realize that the other team is just like themselves with the same goals. The instructors also portray these qualities to set good examples for the dancers.
Team unity is something that every team in every sport needs. Team unity is a feeling among team members that encourages support for each other and also builds lasting friendships. The dance staff through various team gatherings, special days, parties, and inner dance team competitions encourages friendships.
The single most important support and CARING a child needs are not from the instructor, a fellow dancer, or the YMCA, but come from the child's parent(s). The commitment to join the dance team must be made by the parent as well as the child. Behind every good dancer is an even better parent.
Although membership with the YMCA of the Fox Cities Competitive Dance Team is available to anyone who meets the minimum requirement of being able to demonstrate the skills needed according to our guidelines, participation with the team is a privilege, not a right.
Dance is an extremely demanding sport. At every comparable level, from novice to Elite, not many other sports place such demand on the athlete, as does competitive dancing. Consider carefully the demands for becoming a successful competitive dancer: they are outlined throughout this handbook.
You must be willing to make this commitment!
